Accountable to:Theatre Team Manager
JOB PURPOSE
The post holder will be:
1. Responsible for the assessment of care needs, planning, delivering and evaluating a high standard of clinical care.
2. Contributing to the safe and efficient running of the theatre department, through the acceptance of agreed additional responsibilities.
3. Ensuring the administration and documentation of drugs is in accordance with hospital policy.
Professional
ANAESTHETICS The anaesthetic practitioners’ duties are to:
1. Organising, preparing of anaesthetic room and relevant equipment pertinent to the operative list/schedule
2. Assist the anaesthetist in the safe administration of an anaesthetic.
3. Ensure that they are competent in airway management, which should include periodical updating within the anaesthetic arena.
4. Participate in the on call and cardiac arrest rota for the allocated hospital site
5. Maintenance and support of specialist equipment not kept within the theatre department.
6. Once deemed competent carry out safely x-rays of hand patients.
7. Undertake the safe and efficient transfer of patients to other hospitals (if applicable)
SCRUB SIDE The scrub practitioners’ duties are to:
1. Be responsible for the management and organisation of the operative list and clinical care
2. Be responsible for the efficient communication of changes within the operating department to all members of the multidisciplinary theatre team
POST ANAESTHETIC CARE UNIT The recovery practitioners’ duties are to:
1. Be responsible for the safe management of the post anaesthetised/surgical patient and in doing so promote the safe discharge of the patient to ward care
2. Be responsible for the monitoring and nursing management of the surgical patient e.g. airway management, wounds, drains and pain management.
Clinical and Leadership function The post holder will work in accordance with:
1. The philosophy of the theatre department
2. The NMC Code of Professional Conduct, HPC guidelines, Hospital policies and procedures
3. Provide a high standard of nursing care and treatment to patients within the theatre department
4. Be an effective member of the multidisciplinary team
5. Assess, plan, and/or implement and evaluate holistic nursing care and support to patients
6. Communicate effectively with patients, with the aim of ensuring patient understanding, comfort and well-being.
7. Communicate effectively with medical staff, nursing, clerical and other health care workers to promote the health, welfare and care of patients.
8. Ensure provision of comfortable, suitable and welcoming environment for patients
9. Demonstrate practice, based on current advances in nursing practice and evidence-based research.
10. Participate in Clinical Supervision and provide support for nursing and ODP students, theatre support workers, junior staff nurses, return to practice and adaptation students
11. Promote Clinical Governance issues and participate in benchmarking within the operating department
12. Carry out duties as deemed appropriate by Team Manager
13. To contribute to supporting the Team Manager in their duties
14. To acknowledge any personal limitations of competence in accordance with the ‘ NMC Code of Professional Conduct’ (2002) and HPC guidelines
Managerial The post holder will:
1. Provide leadership and supervision for theatre support workers, nursing and ODP students, junior staff nurse, return to practice and adaptation students.
2. Develop and promote good working relationships within the wider team.
3. Promote patient, staff and relatives’ safety at all times and be familiar with current Health & Safety policies reporting any concerns to the Team Manager or Theatre Manager
4. To take charge of the area during the absence of senior staff
5. To participate in discussions relating to care and its delivery and evaluation with other members of the multidisciplinary team.
6. Provide clinical support to peers.
Educational The post holder will:
1. Be responsible for identifying own learning needs and professional development in conjunction with the Team Manager in accordance with ‘NMC Post Registration Education and Practice’ (2002) or HPC guidelines
2. Set own objectives with Team Manager and review own performance within the Hospital’s Appraisal process.
3. Act as mentor to theatre support workers, nursing and ODP students, junior staff nurses, return to practice nurses and adaptation nurses, as appropriate.
4. Participate in creating an environment conducive to learning.
5. To assist with induction programmes, preceptorship and mentorship of new staff as appropriate
6. Participate in and promote teaching within the theatre department
7. Take every opportunity to maintain and improve professional knowledge and competence.
8. Provide support to colleagues undertaking NVQ or other development opportunities
9. Undertake all identified training and assessments including mandatory updates as identified by the Theatre Manager
GENERAL INFORMATION:

The post holder must maintain the confidentiality of information about patients, staff and other Hospital service business in accordance with the Code of Confidentiality and the Data Protection Act, 1998. A breach of confidentiality in relation to manual or computer data will result in disciplinary action being taken in accordance with the Hospital’s disciplinary procedure and may lead to dismissal
Health and Safety: Employees must be aware of the responsibilities placed on them under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 to ensure that the agreed safety procedures are carried out to maintain a safe environment.

Qualifications
1. Registered Nurse
2. Current NMC registration in adult or general nursing
3. Educated to first degree level or equivalent
