Responsible to:Theatre Team Manager 

 

 JOB PURPOSE

1. The post holder will be responsible for the assessment, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care within Recovery without direct supervision and will be required to demonstrate procedures and supervise qualified and unqualified staff. As deemed competent.

2 To participate in the duty and standby/on-call rota taking charge of the Recovery as required. When necessary undertake duties of senior staff colleagues to cover for duty rota, annual leave and sickness.

3 To participate in the co-ordination of resources including staff, equipment and stock.

4 Act as at practitioner and role model demonstrating knowledge skills and expertise within the area of work.

 

6. Responsibilities of the Post

 

Professional:

• Ability to exercise professional accountability and responsibility adhering to:

Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of Professional Conduct. Health Professional Council Code of Professional Conduct.

• To contribute positively to the effectiveness and efficiency of the teams in which he/she works.

• Create a working environment, which engenders high morale and optimum performance.

 

Clinical:

• The post holder will be responsible for the assessment, implementation and evaluation of programme of care within the Theatre department. Will ensure that the safety, comfort and dignity of the patients remain paramount.

• Will be expected to carry out care of the patient without direct supervision within Recovery and will be required to demonstrate procedures and supervise qualified and unqualified staff.

• To participate in the duty and standby/on-call rote taking charge as required. When necessary undertake duties of senior staff, to cover duty rota, annual leave and sickness. Within boundaries of professional accountability.

• To participate in Clinical Supervision and give leadership, support and advice to junior staff.

• Ensure all documentation, operation’s register, theatre care plans and theatre computer data is complete and accurate in accordance with professional bodies (NMC/HPC) and hospital guidelines. • In conjunction with the Theatre staff set and monitor procedures and standards of care within the department. Promote and extend the development of nursing standards and audit.

• Participate in research projects quality assurance groups and subsequently evaluate the results in formulating new policies and procedures within the department.

• Maintain and utilise equipment in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions and local policy. Deal promptly with defects and report to appropriate members of staff.

• To contribute to a healthy and safe working environment by adhering to health and safety regulations and Hospital policies. Maintain departmental / organisational policies with regard to Health and Safety matters: COSHH, Storage and administration of medicines, fire, X-ray/laser etc

• Participate in patient transfers from wards to the Operating Theatres.

• Participating in the preparation of the Anaesthetic, Theatre and Recovery environment for anaesthetics surgery and post-operative care.

• Provide assistance in the Anaesthetic, Theatre and Recovery area as required. Participating in the preparation of surgical instrumentation and equipment.

• Maintaining stock levels within the Anaesthetic, Theatre and Recovery environment. Providing assistance as a circulating member of the theatre team including:

• Safe movement of the patient onto the operating table as required by the Surgeon, Anaesthetist and Theatre Team.

• Preparation of Instrument sets and equipment.

• Assisting the Surgeons and Anaesthetists as required, including assistance with blood transfusions and the drawing up and labelling of drugs.

• Assisting other members of the team, in the preparation and clearing of theatres, e.g. Moving apparatus and lights and cleaning up after Operations.

• Participating as a scrubbed member of the theatre team in surgical procedures and carrying out safety checks of swabs, instruments and needles in conjunction with a second person and reporting on the same to the surgeon. In accordance with Hospital policies and procedures.

• Participating as a qualified member of the theatre team in carrying out safety checks for the administration of Intravenous Fluids and Blood and administration of medication In accordance with Hospital policies and procedures

• Storage and ordering of all medication in accordance with Hospital policy and procedures

• Assisting in the care, labelling and despatch of specimens for Laboratory examination.

• Maintaining stock levels within the theatre environment.

• Be able to monitor, assess, implement and evaluate patient care and maintain a safe and comfortable Recovery environment till the patient is discharged back to the ward.

• Monitor, assess, implement and evaluate patient care through out the Recovery period.

• Accurately record patient observation and care in Patient Notes, Theatre Care Plan and Theatre Register. Participate in Departmental housekeeping duties.

• Cleaning and Decontamination of theatre equipment in accordance with Decontamination and Infection Control Policies.

• Cleaning of Anaesthetic, Theatre and Recovery environment.

 

Managerial:

• To participate in appraisal on an annual basis..

• With the Senior Members of staff ensure that the quality of patient care by audit of the standards of care, delivered within the Operating Theatres

• Ensure that infection control policies and procedures are implemented and audited with the Operating Theatre.

 

 

Educational:

• To fully participate in the Hospital appraisal system review and personal development planning process on an annual basis.

• To achieve and demonstrate agreed standards of personal and professional development within agreed timescales

 

 

Stock Management

• Responsible for maintaining stock control and ensure effective use of resources.

 

 

Communications

• Communicate relevant issues between patients, visitors, colleagues and other members of the multi-disciplinary team working within the main theatre department Be responsible for seeking advice from Senior Staff whenever the need arises.

• Liaise with the anaesthetists, surgeons and other health care professions to ensure consistent assessment, development and evaluation of programmes of individualised patient care.

• Report accidents, untoward clinical incidents and unsafe conditions of practice to a Senior members of staff. Ensure appropriate documentation is completed.

• Monitor and respond to medical and theatre staff bleeps.

The post holder must maintain the confidentiality of information about patients, staff and other Hospital service business in accordance with the Code of Confidentiality and the Data Protection Act, 1998. A breach of confidentiality in relation to manual or computer data will result in disciplinary action being taken in accordance with the Hospital’s disciplinary procedure and may lead to dismissal

 

Health and Safety:

Employees must be aware of the responsibilities placed on them under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 to ensure that the agreed safety procedures are carried out to maintain a safe environment.
